I'm Back!

After an Internet break that felt like an eternity, I am now chained to my computer eager to be swallowed up by the blogosphere once more. Over the last three months, I went on many adventures of an outdoorsy nature, and my appreciation for soap and toilet paper knows no bounds. However, now that I am surrounded by the comforts of home, my head is spinning while I try to catch up on all of the things I missed such as the second season of Downton Abbey and the hundreds of new beauty products that are jumping out at me from magazine ads (the Maybelline Dream Bouncy Blush has me intrigued). It will probably take a few days before I settle back down into some sort of blogging rhythm, so stay tuned...

It has been over two years since I started The Fashion Planner, which is no small achievement since I had tried blogging before but was never able to stick with it. It has been such a pleasure connecting with people through blogging and discovering people who love fashion and books as much as I do. Sadly, the time has come for me to take a blogging/internet break. A new job means a new adventure but no time for blogging. I'm not going to say much about my new job right now because I'm a bit superstitious and don't want to jinx it (silly, I know), but I am excited about it since this job is completely out of the box for me, and I love living outside of the box.

I hope to manage a few posts around Christmas time, but I may not be able to start blogging again until February. When I return, I hope to revamp this blog a bit, perhaps even switch to WordPress. (I'd love to hear any thoughts on Blogger vs. WordPress.) Even though this will be my last post for a while, I will still be online this week updating Twitter, Tumblr, and Pinterest.

Baking tie-dye cupcakes

When I read I Heart Daily's post about She's the First, I was intrigued by the organization, which sponsors girls’ education in the developing world, helping them be the first in their families to graduate. For a fundraiser, the organization encourages people to hold a Tie-Dye Cupcake Bake-Off. Even though I wont be able to participate in the national bake-off week, I had to try my hand at the cupcakes and share what I had learned about this organization.

Re-reading Georgiana: Duchess of Devonshire by Amanda Foreman

I read this biography a few years ago and enjoyed it. The Duchess is based on this book, and while I found the movie beautiful but depressing, the book is simply fascinating. Georgiana's life reads like an eighteenth century soap opera.

Morning Makeup Routine

IFB Project #16 asks bloggers to discuss their morning makeup routines. My makeup routine is pretty simple. After washing my face, I apply Mary Kay TimeWise Day Solution and then a foundation. Right now I am using CoverGirl NatureLux Silk Foundation, which I like to apply with a foundation brush for more even coverage. A touch of blush, a swipe of mascara, and a dab of lip balm finishes off my look. My current mascara is from blinc, a brand I was unfamiliar with until I won this mascara in a giveaway. The staying power is really great!

My routine does change a bit depending on where I am going that day. I reach for the Balm overshadow for times when I want to draw attention to my eyes. M.A.C. and Limecrime are favorites for when I want to play up my lips with bold colors.

Snip, Snip

This week I decided that it was time to rock a new look and had between eight and ten inches cut off my hair. Usually, I get my hair cut gradually into a shorter style, but since I wanted to donate my hair, I had it chopped off all at once. I've never donated hair before, so I did some research before deciding on Children With Hairloss, an organization that helps people under 21 who are suffering from medically related hair loss. It was a great feeling walking out of the salon with a new look and a way to give somebody else a new look, too.

It was a beautiful day just right for a few outfit pics. I love this wrap by FRAAS, which was sent to me by LiptonPublicity. The wrap is so soft, and since it is black, it works with most of my clothes. I love color, but I have a tendency of dressing like a giant bruise relying on outfits that are black and blue. Makeup is where I go color crazy such as this orange lipstick from Lime Crime. I forgot to get pictures of my nails, but I am wearing a blackish purple glitter from Revlon that reminds me of Deborah Lippmann's Bad Romance. At under $4, Revlon's Facets of Fuchsia is worth grabbing. Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

With the weather starting to feel like fall, I am getting this urge to attempt knitting again. I am not a very good knitter, but knitting is such a lovely cold weather hobby. Wool and the Gang sells several kits, like this one for a hoody scarf, that includes everything one needs to get started.

Making cinnamon rolls

I made a batch of cinnamon rolls and meant to take a picture, but most of them were gone before I realized I had forgotten to take a picture. Instead, here is a picture from the recipe I used. The cinnamon rolls are a bit time consuming but oh, so worth it.

I managed to snag a pair of knee socks from the Missoni for Target collection. Who knew the collection would sell out so fast? I'm hoping the frenzy will wear off in a couple of weeks and people will start returning some of the items they hoarded. Was anyone able to buy what they wanted from the collection?

Suddenly, I have the most amazing craving for red velvet, and I'm not talking about the fabric. White Hot Spring

Another Fashion Week is in full force, but alas, I am stuck in the Midwest getting my runway fix thanks to IFB, The Cut, and Style.com. I'm really not in the mood to look at spring clothes since I am just now embracing the idea of fall and the need to layer off and on throughout the day, but who am I to argue with the timing of the fashion gods?

This week's IFB Project asks bloggers to discuss some of their favorite spring trends. While some of my favorite designers have not shown their collections yet, I decided to go ahead and post some thoughts. Since it is spring, the de rigueur bright colors and floral explosions are on display (see Tracy Reese and Prabal Gurung). However, my favorite trend so far is the use of white, off-white, and beige that is popping up in many collections. Whether it is Erin Fetherston's interpretation of Mia Farrow's playful shift dresses or Jenni Kayne's take on urban athleticism, white and its sister hues will be a major trend next spring.

Old Hollywood Reigns

Zac Posen's collection embraced curves befitting an Old Hollywood screen legend. Amidst the jewel tones were a smattering of beige dresses that could turn any woman into a pearl.

Life as a Fairy Tale

When I read this post from Fashion Editor at Large about the real wedding of Lydia Hearst that doubled as a runway show for Imitation of Christ, I was amazed. With gorgeous, Depression-era inspired dresses, the relaunch of Imitation of Christ was a stunning display of art meeting life.

This afternoon I made a batch of muffins using Hodgson Mill's Gluten Free Apple Cinnamon Muffin Mix. I added extra butter and sugar because the batter tasted a little sandy... and because I have a horrible sweet tooth. OpenSky is a little confusing at first because you can only follow 10 curators when you join, but the site is definitely worth visiting because there are plenty of unusual products (design, food, style, and health items) for sale. I like following Padma Lakshmi and recently purchased the Núñez de Prado Spanish Olive Oil from her boutique. I never knew olive oil could taste so buttery!

Business 2 Blogger: Heelys Campaign

This is my first project with Business 2 Blogger, a site that matches businesses with bloggers. Heelys are wheeled shoes that come in several different sneaker styles. I decided on the Sassy, a light purple glitter and stud, Converse style shoe.

I love how these shoes look, but I am absolutely dreadful when it comes to rolling in them. The Heelys site has several videos on the tricks one can do while wearing their shoes, but the only feat I have been able to accomplish is propelling myself forward while clinging to the kitchen counters in an attempt not to fall backward and slam my head on the floor. When I'm not attempting to roll, I just stomp around like a sparkly-footed elephant. Heelys are for all ages, but it is a pity that coordination is not included. I would even pay extra. Thankfully, taking the wheels in and out is a snap, so I will be wearing these shoes sans wheels. On a side note, these shoes are as safe as roller skates, so a helmet and adult supervision are both good ideas when it comes to kids in Heelys.

Besides my lack of skill, my only complaint is the sizing. I found the website a little confusing, and ended up ordering the wrong size the first time. The shoes, also, run a little wide, so my shoes are starting to crease in spots. As for style, these shoes may be a bit over the top, but that's what I love about them.

The Good, the Bad, and the Giveaway - Is it worth it?

First, let me say that this post does not feature a giveaway. I love hosting and entering giveaways, but lately, I've noticed that giveaways are becoming a liability and are no longer the asset they once were. Instead of rewarding loyal followers and creating goodwill between readers and a brand, giveaways increasingly create frustration, anger, and disappointment. As I posted earlier this year, sometimes the prize does not live up to expectations. Hosting giveaways on The Fashion Planner is my way of thanking readers as well as working to attract new followers, so it is frustrating when a prize I give away is a disappointment to the winner.

Giveaways can, also, be misleading. Companies hosting giveaways on facebook are a prime example of building hype only to incite anger when they cannot deliver the goods to their 20,000 new fans. I have seen several companies promise a "surprise" or a giveaway that gets followers in a frenzy only to fail to meet the demand or to offer a shamefully small discount. The sheer hatred that this creates between consumers and brands is astounding. While disappointed consumers may be suffering from disproportionate rage, companies do themselves no favors by enraging consumers and doing nothing to pacify the people they were trying to court.

Finally, I must confess my own giveaway disappointment. Yesterday, I checked my email to see that I had won a bag from a fashion site I liked. Needless to say, I was excited until I saw that I had been sent another message saying that if I did not respond in an hour they would be picking a new winner. Since I checked my email two or three hours after the last message was sent, I lost the bag. I have never heard of a winner being given three hours to respond to a message, and the distaste I felt for the fashion site was extreme, especially since I recently mentioned this site as a favorite. While one can argue that it is the site's right to run giveaways the way they choose, I have to wonder about the rational behind a system built to disappoint their giveaway winners. After all, how many winners were contacted before me and were just as unlucky to have not checked their email in that narrow time frame?

While I am still planning on hosting a few more giveaways this year, I am wondering about your thoughts on giveaways:

I can't believe that fall is right around the corner. Where has this year gone? While I'm looking forward to eating copious amounts of apple doughnuts, apple pie, and apple cider while watching the leaves change colors, my favorite part of fall is back to school shopping. Even though I am not in school anymore, I still like to stock up on new pens, notebooks, and of course, new clothes.

My Blogging Tool Kit

This week's IFB Project asks bloggers to share what is in their blogging tool kit. I've never given much thought to the tools I use for blogging. A computer and a camera would seem to sum up the tools of the trade, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized that my tool kit consists of more than what I thought.

The most basic tool for any blogger is a computer. I am a proud owner of a MacBook. This is my second one, so I like to think of myself as a dedicated user, although I know there are still plenty of functions I don't utilize.

While an SLR camera is on my wish list, my current camera is the Canon PowerShot SD780IS. I like it because it is small and red and has pretty good zoom capabilities.

My Blackberry Curve may not be as smart as the new phones on the market (how I wish I had an iphone), but it is great for checking email and updating twitter and facebook, which is all I do anyways...

I bought a Flip Mino HD a few years ago with the intent of making fashion videos documenting outfits and such. Sadly, this hasn't happened yet, but the camera did come in handy for my cousin's wedding.

I am including products to review in my tool kit because I love reviewing products on my blog - especially beauty products. A Lime Crime lipstick and an Orly nail lacquer stand next to my laptop.

A notebook and pen are helpful for keeping track of ideas and posts. I like inexpensive spiral bound notebooks because they are flexible and are not too precious to rip pages out of them. I've taken to calling my notebook my "blog log".

Finally, books and magazines are a constant source of inspiration. Whether I am thumbing through an issue of Lula or perusing The Fashion File, I am constantly on the lookout for something to blog about.

What's in My Bag August Edition

It's only been a few months since my last "What's in My Bag" post, but I couldn't resist participating in this week's IFB Project, which requests a look inside bloggers' bags. There is something irresistible about peeking inside other people's bags (with permission, of course), and there are so many lovely posts to browse this week.

Currently, I am toting around a much abused Butler Bag by Jen Groover for Avon. I keep meaning to replace it with a nice leather satchel, but I've grown rather attached to the roomy Butler Bag with its built in storage. Sadly, my bag is on its last leg, so I think I'll be buying that satchel pretty soon.

Fall Caper

It's not quite the middle of August and already the leaves are starting to turn golden red and brown. So, now I am thinking about may fall wardrobe, and I can't help but think CAPES! I love the classic look of capes, although I don't always enjoy wearing them because sometimes I can't use my arms and other times I just feel like a walking tent. However, I am willing to risk looking like an armless, walking tent because the cape is back. Plus, many capes now feature handy slits down the sides allowing one's arms to swing free, which seals the deal for me.

Sewing and the Fashion Blogger

Sewing is getting to be a lost art. What was once a necessary life skill passed down from mother to daughter has now become the provence of the diyer and the eccentric. It's a shame really. Along with writing, photography, and html, basic sewing skills would be an immense addition to the fashion blogger's arsenal. Having the ability to make something beautiful to wear is empowering and creates endless possibilities for achieving a unique look.

There is a down side to sewing your own clothes. In some affluent areas there is a belief that sewing your own clothes means you are too poor to afford the real thing. For other people, homemade clothes conjure up images of Little House on the Prairie style dresses worn by women in certain religious sects. However, thanks to design shows such as Project Runway and the emergence fashion minded entrepreneurs launching lines from their homes, sewing is poised to be cool again.

Just like mixing Chanel with H&M, homemade clothes should be worn with store bought items, unless you have mad sewing skills and are launching your own clothing line. Sewing allows you to make that blouse you haven't been able to find in stores or to create your own designer inspired coat. When it comes to wearing homemade clothes, there is no better compliment than, "Where did you buy that?"

Today I am wearing a skirt I made using a Cynthia Rowley pattern from Simplicity. I'm, also, wearing a StyleMint tee, American Apparel scarf, and Boutique 9 shoes. In the background is my current sewing project - a Cinderella inspired ball gown.

Day-Timer and the Importance of Time Management

Time management is something I struggle with - I'm a procrastinator and will look for any excuse to avoid an unpleasant task; after all, life will go on whether or not the laundry gets done. However, to be successful in work and in life, it is important to learn how to prioritize and keep to a schedule.

Something I have learned is the importance of having a planner. I feel absolutely lost without a place to jot down appointments and make notes to myself.

Whether she was singing about a failed relationship or about not wanting to go to rehab, Amy's style was always recognizable. This week's IFB Project asks bloggers to pay tribute to the late singer by channeling her unique look.

I admit the hair should be higher (where's a bumpit when you need one?) and the eyeliner could be more exaggerated, but it's the attempt that matters. Right?

I wore a long, black slip, which I belted over a cami and full skirt, and black, peep toe pumps to complete the look.

Design for Shabby Apple

Shabby Apple is currently holding a design contest where one lucky will winner will have the opportunity to create a dress, skirt, or blouse for Shabby Apple's spring line. Last year I posted a review of Shabby Apple's Cider Dress and would love the opportunity to create my own Shabby Apple dress.

For inspiration I turned to:

The new duchess and her younger sister never fail to impress with their classic style and manicured appearance.

While I must confess that I still have not seen Mad Men or In the Mood for Love, it is impossible to follow fashion blogs and not see images from these vintage inspired productions.

Because I have a curvy figure, I tend to avoid full skirts, but a closet full of straight skirts can be so boring. Enter the peplum skirt, which adds a little flair without taking over your bottom half. Mandarin collars are a favorite because they look polished without clinging to my neck the way turtlenecks tend to do.

The Design

For my design, I envision a stretch cotton twill in a mint or apple green with navy blue piping across the chest and outlining the collar, sleeves and peplum skirt. Tiny, navy blue buttons run across the chest and down the back. The peplum skirt is longer in back where it splits to show off the buttons that cover the zipper. The sleeves hit a little above the elbow, and the skirt hits right at the knee.

The Duchess of Cambridge may be bringing back pantyhose, but sometimes it's just too hot to incase your legs in nylon. Forever 21 & WWF

Panda Sublimation Tee

Earlier this year, I posted about symbolically adopting a panda through the World Wildlife Fund. Now, Forever 21 has joined with the WWF and has created a line of t-shirts to help raise money and awareness about protecting nature. Through May 31, 2012, a dollar from each tee sold will go to the WWF, with a minimum contribution of $20,000. I haven't yet gone to Forever 21 to check the tees out, but I like the designs that I've seen online. I'm pretty sure I'll have to buy at least the panda tee. While Forever 21 has been getting a lot of bad press lately over copyright infringement, it is nice to see the company trying to improve their image by working for a good cause.

DIY Earring Photo Frame Holder

I meant to post this tutorial a couple of months ago, but silly me forgot to post it. This is a great way to display your earrings while working them into your room's decor.

Supplies:

picture frame

door screen or heavy mesh

exact-o knife or rotary cutter

scissors

hot glue gun

glue sticks

Step #1

Remove the glass and use a knife or rotary cutter to take off the back of the frame so that you get this.

Step #2

Using the glass or filler paper from the frame, cut a piece of mesh to fit into your empty frame.

Step #3

Place the piece of mesh inside the frame and make any adjustments so that the mesh is flat against the inside of the frame.

Step #4

Hot glue the mesh to the frame. You may want to use pins or a popsicle stick to press the mesh into the glue.

Step #5

Let the glue cool then flip the frame over and hang your earrings on the mesh.

Now you have a pretty way to display your earrings!

Thoughts on StyleMint

A few days ago I received my first t-shirt from StyleMint. I had mentioned earlier that I was interested in seeing what kind of t-shirts Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen would design. Sadly, I do not own a T from The Row, so I cannot compare StyleMint to their high end line...

StyleMint T's are exclusively designed for StyleMint members and are manufactured in limited quantities each month. T's sell for $29.99, and you have the option to skip a month if there is not a style you like.

I decided to try the Fillmore in grey/navy stripe.

The shirt is made from a poly/cotton/rayon blend and has a roomy fit and generous v-neck. I ordered a size 2 (small-medium), but the shirt fits a bit wider than what I was expecting. I don't usually tuck shirts in, but I think the Fillmore looks much better tucked in, which is how it is modeled online.

Overall, I am happy with my T and am excited to see what styles are offered next month.

Everyone loves a wedding, or so they say. I actually find weddings rather boring. A cookie cutter ceremony, cheaply dressed bridal party, and bland reception food do not make an exciting event. However, I do enjoy thumbing through bridal magazines and oohing over weddings where the budget must rival the revenue of a small country. This past week saw a smattering of celebrity weddings.

This year's other royal wedding happened in Monaco. Despite rumors that the future princess tried to escape just days before the wedding, the ceremonies took place with all the pomp and circumstance as if nothing had happened. I really doubt the rumors are true. The couple had been dating for several years, so surely, she knew what she was getting into when she accepted his proposal. Of course, if the rumors are true, it must be dreadful to be held captive in a foreign country where they have made you their princess...

For the civil ceremony, the new princess wore a robin's egg blue, Chanel pantsuit. Later that day, she wore a seafoam gown to the celebratory concert.

Eating a s'more sundae

There is a wonderful ice cream stand down the road from my grandma's, and it is the perfect treat on a hot day. The s'more sundae is loaded with vanilla ice cream and topped with whipped cream, fudge, marshmallow sauce, and graham crackers. Yum!

Reading The Boleyn Inheritance by Philippa Gregory

Philippa Gregory is a bit hit or miss for me, but I found this book for $1.50 at a thrift store and couldn't pass it up. I am fascinated by the Tudor court and am so far enjoying this book.

Watching Blake Shelton on The Voice

This is a man who loves his team and isn't afraid to get choked up about it. The duet he performed with his finalist, Dia Frampton, is one of my favorite performances from the show.

The Stephanie is a cute sunhat from Scala Collezione and is just right for a day spent outdoors. The hat is made of ribbon and trimmed with ric-rac, but the best part is that the hat has a sun-protection value of UPF 50+. LiptonPublicity sent me The Stephanie in white to review. I wore it out for a trip with friends, and the hat was deemed "Audrey-ish", which is high praise for a hat. I like that the hat is crushable allowing me to roll it up and stash it in my bag after the sun goes down.

I live in an area that thinks of itself as the NYC of the Midwest. Poor delusional fools. Of course, I've never been to NYC, so maybe they are right. However, the best thing about living in this area is that I can leave the house wearing sequins and pajamas and it is perfectly acceptable. Why just the other day I saw a girl walking across the street wearing an octopus tutu acting like it was the most normal thing in the world. This is good because I fully plan to experiment with some Chinese cutwork inspired lashes. Even if they make me look like an escapee from a sci-fi flick, I will not be laughed out of the grocery store because most likely there is someone dressed as a giant squid waiting in line behind me.

I'm a huge fan of Tarte products because their makeup is formulated without parabens, synthetic fragrances, and phthalates. Plus, I love that Tarte worked with the lead makeup artist from the show. Some Thoughts on Why Miss USA Needs A Makeover

I was one of those millions of little girls who grew up watching Miss USA and Miss America. I entered my first pageant when I was 21, and while I have never competed in the two famous national pageants, I have seen my fair share of sequins and hairspray. Watching Miss USA last night, I could not help but be disappointed that the pageant no longer had the magic and glamour it once held for me as a child. What's gone wrong? Somehow pageants are still trying to relive the glory days of the 1980's and missed the memo about time marching on. Here are some of my thoughts on what needs to change:

Create a Role Model

Unlike Twilight where 2 hours of teen angst targeted at a rabid fan base created stars overnight, the 2 hours it takes to crown Miss USA is not enough to capture the country's attention and make the winner America's sweetheart. Other than the week before pageant night, the average American does not hear about Miss USA until a year later when the process starts all over again. If it is not pageant time, the only reason Miss USA is in the news is because of a scandal, which then must be argued makes her the wrong choice for Role Model of the Year. The reigning Miss USA spends her year promoting important organizations such as the USO and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, but these actions go unnoticed by the general public because they are not headline making news. To be influential, Miss USA needs to be in the news, and to be in the news, Miss USA needs to be relevant.

Capture the public's attention

Pageantry is alive and well in the United States just look at Lady Gaga and shows such as America's Got Talent where spectacle is the name of the game. Miss USA needs to shake up the format and step into the 21st century. I would love to see contestants compete on a reality show. I'm picturing America's Next Top Model meets The Apprentice. Divide contestants into teams, assign them tasks such as photo shoots and fundraising, and vote contestants off until you reach the final 15. The public needs to see these girls as working, thinking women and not pampered airheads in a bikinis.

Make audience participation count

I think it is great that online votes determined the 16th finalist (yeah Miss New Mexico!), but the fan voting meter was absolutely pointless. If you want the audience participating, make the votes count for something - this is the age of Dancing with the Stars after all.

Cheesy hosts + corny commentary = lame

Last night's pageant was best viewed on mute to avoid the hosts and fashion commentators who felt it was their duty to contribute to the pageant's hot mess. I would now like to recommend something revolutionary: Neil Patrick Harris. I think NPH should host Miss USA because he is funny and smart and a genius at making lame award shows cool. He even won an Emmy for hosting the Tony Awards, and if he can do that for Broadway's forgotten "Oscar night", he can do it for Miss USA. NPH can, also, perform for the evening gown competition and save the pageant organizers from embarrassing attempts at trying to be hip. Bonus points if Hugh Jackman co-hosts. Oh, and please get rid of the fashion commentary. Nobody needs to be told that the contestants are gorgeous or that the girls are nervous. Anybody with an ounce of commonsense already knows this.

Celebrate diversity

Last time I checked the United States was one of the most diverse countries on Earth, but you would not know that by looking at past titleholders where the most diversity is in hair color. It's time the winners started looking like Serena Williams, Ellen Page, Selena Gomez, and Tara Lynn. There are millions of little girls who watch Miss USA and think that they are too short, too fat, and too ethnic to be beautiful.

Make the swimsuit competition about about health not sex

This is not 1952, and Miss USA is no longer selling Catalina Swimwear. If Miss USA is supposed to be taken seriously as a public speaker and charity promoter, it might be a good idea to stop portraying her as an amateur stripper. If Miss USA is trying to encourage girls to be self-confident, then it might be nice to stop sending the message that equates sex appeal with self-worth. Dressing contestants in sweats and having them drop down and do push ups probably is not the best ratings idea, but let's find a way to make the swimsuit competition celebrate living a healthy lifestyle and not about the thinnest girl in the tiniest bikini.

Explain how judging works

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, but it would be nice to explain why Miss Hawaii does not make it past evening gown and Miss Alabama does. Just like ballroom dancing where good technique is only obvious to those who know what to look for, Americans need to be educated about what makes one contestant stand out in a crowd of beautiful women.

How to do a Photo Shoot on the Cheap

These days it feels like every successful fashion blogger is able to post professional level photos thanks to designer wardrobes, photographer boyfriends, and SLR cameras. Sadly, these are not things your average American girl has access to. I am especially saddened by the lack of photography loving of-course-I'll-let-you-play-dress-up-and-take-your-picture-everyday-boyfriends available in the Midwest. Perhaps they are only available on the coasts? Despite these setbacks I became determined to do my own photo shoot. I recruited my mom as photographer, commandeered her bedroom for use as a studio, and turned into an overly critically diva whenever artistic differences arose. Through all this I learned that a) point and shoot cameras get the job done, b) a pound of makeup and a fancy dress make anyone look better, and c) a sense of humor goes a long way.

Here are some other tips:

1. Gather inspiration

For this photo shoot, I wanted on old Hollywood glamour feel, so I looked to photos of Elizabeth Taylor for inspiration.

2. Shoot against a solid colored wall

To get a studio look, shoot against a solid colored wall. Try using walls that are off white or even peach colored to give a bit of glow to your pictures.

3. Use natural light

Golden hour is the perfect time for outdoor shoots as wells as indoor shoots where you are using windows as your main lighting. All of these pictures were taken indoors using the sunlight streaming through the window. It takes patience to wait for the light to hit just right, but the results are worth it.

4. Fix it in post

Don't worry about being perfect. A flaw here and there makes a photo more interesting, and many issues can be fixed later by cropping and retouching.

5. Play with filters

I edit most of my pictures in iPhoto and love playing with different effects. One of my favorite effects is the antique filter which gives pictures a softer look.

On the hunt for a good book about vintage clothing, I discovered Christa Weil's Secondhand Chic: Finding Fabulous Fashion at Consignment, Vintage, and Thrift Shops. This book is a treasure chest of information concerning fabric, care, and fit. Weil explains the advantages and disadvantages of fabrics as well as how to develop your knowledge of fabric based on touch. There is, also, a wonderful section on the hallmarks of quality clothing and diagrams that illustrate what to look for. Weil, also, discusses visual and feel cues to help you decide if a garment fits properly. There are even a couple pages dedicated to laundry icons, so you won't shrink your new purchase. I highly recommend this book if you are looking to expand your knowledge of clothes or if you are interested in vintage or thrift shopping.

Holiday Memory Jar

It was way too hot to do much outside today. While sorting through keepsakes, I remembered an idea I had seen in a magazine about displaying mementos in a jar. I filled a jar from Ikea with small souvenirs from a cruise I went on a long time ago. The bottom of the jar is lined with a small paper bag to give the feel of sand. Inside is a bundle of cinnamon sticks, a pair of sunglasses, a butterfly bracelet, a couple keychains and plastic rings, a luggage tag, and a handful of various Caribbean currency. I'm rather happy with the way it turned out. Perhaps I'll make more and fill a shelf with memory jars or use the jars as book ends.

When the Prize Disappoints

You've commented and tweeted, and now you are the lucky winner of a... disappointing prize. Now what?

As a blogger, I enjoy hosting giveaways, and I like to think of giveaways as a thank you to my followers, so it's no good when the winner feels that the prize has quality issues. A recent situation has made me realize that there can be a real disconnect between the product I'm sent to review and the prize sent out to the winner. I, also, realize that even though I like a product it might not work for someone else. While I contemplated quality issues and varying taste, I was struck by inspiration - winners could review their prizes!

Eden-Avalon of The Reason for Tears has agreed to write the first prize review. In April, I reviewed the Romina from the Vedette Sensuale Collection and was quite happy with it. Eden-Avalon received the Danette from the store's regular line and found the quality lacking. I should note that the two other winners from the giveaway liked their garments, but I do not know what garments they were sent.

Eden-Avalon's Vedette Sensuale Giveaway Prize Review:

I received style #115 The Danette in black. I took Midnight Cowgirl's advice and ordered a size up, even though Vedette recommended I stick to the chart when I spoke to them on the phone. Unfortunately the item was still too small to really wear and I am quite used to shapewear. I called upon my younger sister, who was two sizes down from the size I ordered but it was also too small and tight for her. The partial body suit reduced my waist by 1 inch and hers by 0. It also reduced my hips by 2 inches and hers by 1. I'm afraid the elastic at the top has already started to wear down. Still - i'm thrilled to have won this item and big thanks to The Fashion Planner for the opportunity to try this out!

Every summer I make a list of books I want to read. I admit the list is flexible. Some books I start and never finish. Other books drop down the list in favor of newer, shinier reads. Talking About Polyphenols Benefits and a Giveaway

Dr. Nicholas Perricone, The New York Times best selling author and world-renowned health aging expert, is at it again with a new line of skin care products derived from superfoods. SUPER by Dr. Nicholas Perricone is a line rich in antioxidants that fight aging so that you can enjoy beautiful, healthy skin.

So, what are polyphenols benefits? According to the SUPER website:

polyphenols are a potent yet gentle flavonoid found in olives that increase skin's moisture retention while guarding against free radical damage.

The Superhero Body Sculpting Serum tones, quenches, and nourishes skin thanks to the use of polyphenols from olives.

Another super food is Chia. Chia seed benefits come from omega-3, which is an anti-inflammatory. The Omega Moisture Nourishing Cream hydrates, nourishes, and replenishes skin thanks to chia.

I have yet to try this line but love that the SUPER products are more affordable than the ones from Perricone MD. I was sent the Perricone MD Cold Plasma Body to review and absolutely love it.

The Cold Plasma Body tones, tightens, and smoothes skin appearance with the help of DMAE, a nutrient found in fish. When I first got the bottle, I applied the lotion all over my body everyday. After using a sizable amount in just a few weeks, I scaled back to applying it only to areas that truly need help. The lotion does have a slightly fishy smell but that disappears soon after applying it. I can definitely tell a difference on days I use the Cold Plasma Body and days that I don't. While this lotion will not replace healthy eating and exercise, it will help your body look better this swimsuit season.

The last few days I have been road-tripping across the Midwest. Even though 24 of the 72 hours I was gone was spent in my car, it was nice to have a change of scenery. FRAAS The Scarf Company

I love to accessorize with scarves, so it was a pleasant surprise to open a package from Lipton Publicity and discover a scarf/wrap from FRAAS. The Solid Viscose Wrap is soft, lightweight, and just the right length for wearing as a scarf or wrap. (Here are some ideas for how to wear.) The only thing I don't like about the wrap is the color. White makes me feel like I have a bandage wrapped around my neck (silly, I know). However, FRAAS does offer the Solid Viscose Wrap in 9 other colors including red, lavender, and turquoise. After doing a little research on their site, I discovered that FRAAS has been operating for 130 years and that their acessories often appear in magazines. I will definitely be keeping FRAAS in mind the next time I go scarf shopping.
